Cottage Rose Square Afghan

NOTES: Finished size: 5 1/2 inches

When working rows 6-9, make sure the right side of the square is facing you (petals up). Otherwise the border will be worked wrong side up.

Materials:
Worsted weight acrylic yarn
(suggest: Caron's Simply Soft or Wintuk)
Colors: Rose and Green
H hook

Instructions:
Rnd 1: (right side) With rose yarn, ch 4; sl st to first ch to form ring.
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc throughout); 15 dc in ring; sl st to top of ch 3 to join. (16 dc).
Rnd 3: Working in front loops only of previous round, ch 4; *(2 tr in next dc) 3 times; ch 4 #; sl st in next dc; ch 4. Repeat from * around, ending at #. Sl st in back loop of first dc. (4 petals).
Rnd 4: Working in the unused back loops of round 2, ch 3; dc in same st; 2 dc in each dc back loop around; sl st in front loop only of starting ch 3. (32 dc).
Rnd 5: Repeat rnd 3. (8 petals). Finish off rose yarn.
Rnd 6: Join green yarn with sl st to any dc back loop. Ch 3; dc in next 2 dc loops; ch 2; skip 1 loop; *dc in next 3 loops; ch 2; skip 1 loop. Repeat from * around; sl st to top of ch 3 to join. (8 3-dc groups and 8 ch-2 loops).
Rnd 7: Sl st in next 2 dc and into next ch-2 loop. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same loop; ch 1; *3 dc in next ch-2 loop; ch 1#; 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 loop; ch 1. Repeat from * twice. End from * to #. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. (12 3-dc groups).
Rnd 8: Sl st in next 2 dc and into next ch-2 loop; ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same loop; ch 1; *(3 dc in next ch-1 loop; ch 1) twice#; 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 loop; ch 1. Repeat from * twice. End from * to #. Sl st to top of ch 3 to join. (16 3-dc groups).
Rnd 9: Sl st in next 2 dc and into next ch-2 loop; ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same loop; ch 1; *(3 dc in next ch-1 loop; ch 1) 3 times#; 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 loop; ch 1. Repeat from * twice. End from * to #. Sl st to top of ch 3. (20 3-dc groups). Finish off; weave in ends.

Turn this flower into a Potholder
Use cotton yarn. Instead of using a traditional granny square around the flower, eliminate the spaces by making it a solid block. Then make a second solid block without the flower for the back side.

 

Hobnail Afghan

Materials:
Caron Wintuk; 18 skeins Off White. [3.5 oz skeins]
PLEASE NOTE: Yarn usage may vary depending on your particular yarn techniques.
Size I crochet hook.

Finished Measurements: Approx. 53" x 71".

Special Stitches Used:
Front Post Dc (FPDC) - yo, insert hk from front to back around post of st, yo, pull up a long lp and complete dc.
Picot sc - insert hk in next st, pull up a lp, (yo, draw thru 1 lp on hk) 3 times, yo draw thru both lps on hk.
Front Post Tr (FPTR) - yo twice, insert hk from front to back around post of stitch indicated, yo and pull up a lp even with last st worked and complete st.

Loopy Shells Afghan

Easy 3-dc Shell Baby Afghan.

Model made with 4 ply aunt Lydia's Nursery Rhyme.

Size: 36 x 46"

Materials:
Size G crochet hook
3 Skeins 2ply sport yarn, each skein-3oz

Instructions:

  • Ch a long ch. you can always cut off the end that you don't need or weave it through the back.
  • BORDER: Do a sc in ea ch across for a few rows to make the work stay flat.
  • Row 1:*ch3, sk 3 ch, sc in next ch, * rep across, turn row 2: ch3, *3dc in next big loop, ch1, rep from * end with 1 dc in last st at end of row, turn
  • Rep rows 1 and 2 til desired length.
  • Make a matching border by repeating border pattern. Fasten off.

 

Purple Passion Afghan

Completed Size: SIZE: Approx 46x68, that is before fringing You can make this afghan in single or double strand yarn.

MATERIALS:
74 ounces of worsted weight yarn in any color
Size J aluminum crochet hook

DIRECTIONS:
Ch 133 loosely.
Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each remaining ch across and ending with a dc in top of ch-3 = 131 dc .
Row 2: Ch 3, sk next dc, tr in each of next 2 dc, tr in skipped dc * sk next dc, tr in each of next 2 dc, tr in skipped dc, repeat from*
Row 3: Ch 3, dc in next treb.and in each tr across ending with dc in top ch3. should have 131 dc again.
Row 4: Ch 3, tr in next dc and in each dc across, ending tr in top of ch-3.
Rep Rows 2 through 4 until afghan measures approx 68" long, ending by working Row 3. Finish off; weave in all

FRINGE: make single knot fringe. Cut 24" strands of yarn; use 4 strands for each fringe.

 

Serenity Afghan

Pattern Note: This design works well with any size hook. The larger the hook the more lacey and open look. The vertical sides create a gentle scalloped edging. Unblocked, this has a rather blockly look. Blocking creates an open lacy look. The design will work on any even number of chain stitches-- it is easy to make the size you desire.

Materials:
For Afghan Finished Size: Approximately 50 X 60".
Wintuck Worsted Weight Yarn (Fisherman)
Approximately 16 skeins (3 1/2 oz)
K-hook

Instructions:
Foundation Row: Chain 158.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each rem ch across (157 sc).
Row 2: Ch 2, turn: sk first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; *ch 1, sk 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * across.
Row 3: Ch 2, turn: 2 hdc in each Ch-1 space across, ending with 2 hdc in sp under turning chain.
Row 4: Chain 2, turn: 2 sc in sp between first two hdc groups, ch 1, *2 sc in in sp between next two hdc groups, ch 1, rep from * across, ending 2 sc in sp under turning chain. Rep Rows 3 and 4 until afghan measures approximately 60 inches or until desired length., ending by working Row 4.
Last Row: Ch 1 turn, sc in each sc and in each ch 1 sp across, ending sc in sp under turning chain. Do not finish off.

Edging: Chain 3 turn, insert hook in first sc on edge, yo and draw thru 2 loops on hook (picot made), *sc in next 2 sc, ch 3, insert hook thru front loop and vertical loop of last sc on same Row, yo and draw thread thru 3 loops on hook, (picot made), repeat from * across, ending with picot in last sc. finish off.

Attach yarn to first sc on remaining horizontial edge and repeat, finish off. Weave all ends in and block, if desired.

 

Shamrock and Shamrock Square

MATERIALS:
4 ply worsted weight
size F or G hook - small amt. bright or dark green

DIRECTIONS:
Ch 5, join w/sl st to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 2, counts as first hdc; make 11 hdc in ring. 12 hdc. Join w/sl st in top ch of ch 2 (first hdc)
Rnd 2: Ch3, 3 trc in next hdc; dc in next hdc; 3 trc in next hdc; ch 3 and join w/sl st at base of last trc, in same hdc. (First leaf made.)** Sc in next hdc; ch 3; 3 trc in next hdc; dc in next hdc, 3 trc in next hdc, ch 3 and join w/ sl st at base of last trc, in same hdc. (Second leaf made.) ** Repeat betw. ** to make third leaf.Ch 7, sc in scond ch from hook, sc in each ch across = 6 sc. Join w/ sl st between first and third leaves. Stem made.

By itself, the shamrock makes a cute pin, or fridgie, or other decoration.

With light green worsted weight:
Rnd 1: join to back of shamrock, near bottom of any trc in leaf, where you want a corner to start. *Ch 4, skip several stitches and sc to back of shamrock.* Repeat 7 times (8 loops) in a square around back ofshamrock Every other loop will form a corner of your square, so try to space them evenly. On last loop, join w/sl st to sc of first loop.
Rnd 2: Sl st in first loop. Ch 3, [2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc ]in same loop - first corner made. *Ch 1, 2 dc in next ch 4 loop, ch 1; [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in next loop (next corner made)* Repeat between * 2 times, then ch 1, 2 dc in last loop, ch 1, join w/sl st to 1st ch 3.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, turn work so shamrock is now showing (right side). 1 dc in ch 1; ch 1, 2 dc in next ch 1, *ch 1, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in next ch 2 (corner made); [ch 1, 2 dc in next ch 1] twice* Repeat betw. * twice; ch 1, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in last ch 2 (last corner made). Join w/sl st to 1st Ch 3 and fasten off.
Rnd 4: With dark green, join in any corner ch 2. [Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in same ch 2, corner made. *[Ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1] 3 times, ch 1, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in next ch 2* Repeat betw * twice. [Ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1] 3 times; join w/ sl st to top of 1st ch 3. Fasten off.
Rnd 5: With light green, join in any corner ch 2. Ch 2, hdc in each stitch to next corner ch 2. [Ch 1, hdc in same ch 2, hdc in each stitch to next corner ch 2] three times; hdc in beginning corner ch 2, ch 1 and join w/sl st to first ch 2. Finish off.

 

Sunflower Square Afghan Pattern

MATERIALS:

  • Size G hook makes a 6" square using ww yarn
  • MC: Black (or color of your choice)
  • CC: Yellow (or color of your choice)

SPECIAL STITCHES:
Mid-Anchor Stitch (MAS): YO, insert hook into next dc and into back of second tr on petal, YO, pull through 3 loops (2 loops on hook), YO, pull through 2 loops.  MAS made
Top-Anchor Stitch (TAS): YO, insert hook into next dc and into top stitch in back of petal, YO, pull though 3 loops (2 loops on hook), YO, pull through 2 loops.  TAS made.

**NOTE: For counting purposes, MAS ans TAS sts are counted as dc's.

DIRECTIONS:

Center:
Rnd 1: With MC, ch 4, sl st in first ch to form ring.  St st in ring, ch 1, work 11 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc. (12 sc made)
Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same sp (1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) 3 times, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, join with sl st in top of beg ch 3. Finish off.  (16 dc)

Petals:
Rnd 3: Right side facing, attach CC with sl st in front loop of chain 3 from previous round. *Chain 7 loosely In the back loops only, sl st in second chain from hook, dc in next chain, tr in each of next 2 chains, dc in next chain, hdc in last chain, sl st in front loop of next dc from previous round* Repeat from * to * fifteen times. Last petal should now be joined in same st as first petal. Finish off. (16 petals)

Square: (all work in this round is done on wrong side with back of petals facing you.
Rnd 4: With MC (sl st, ch 3, dc), in any remaning back loop of center circle. [dc in next 3 sts, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next st] 3 times. DC in each of next 3 sts, (2 dc, ch 1) in next st, join with sl st to top of beg ch 3. (28 dc)
Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in same st, *[dc in next st, (work MAS in next 2 sts, dc in next st) 2 times*  (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in corner sp]  3 times.  Work * to * once.  (2 dc, ch 1) in next st, join with sl st to top of beg ch 3.  (44dc made)
Rnd 6: Ch 3, turn so front of petals are facing you.  (Dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in ch 1 sp, dc in each st around working (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in each corner sp, join with sl st to top of beg ch 3. (60 dc)
Rnd 7: With rs facing, sl st in next dc, (sl st, ch 3) in ch 1 sp, turn to ws, dc in same ch 1 sp, [*Dc in next st, (work TAS in next st, dc in next 3 sts) 3 times, work TAS in next st, dc in next st* (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in ch 1 sp} 3 times. Lil' Petals Baby Afghan Pattern

NOTE: This pattern uses shells made with sets of 3 double crochets. Approximate size, 36 x 46".

Materials:
2 ply baby/sport yarn, 3 (3oz) skeins
Size G crochet hook

Directions:

Ch a long chain (you can always cut off the end that you don't need or weave it through the back.)

Beginning Border: I like to do a sc in ea ch across for a few rows to make the work stay flat

Row 1: in 2nd ch from the hook do a sc, sk 1 ch, *do a 3 dc group shell in the next ch, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch, rep from * for width of afghan, ending with 5dc shell, 1dc in last ch. turn.

Row 2: Ch2, sk 1 st, *3dc shell in center of prev row 3dc shell, sk 1 st, rep from * end with 3dc shell, ch1, 1 dc in last ch, turn.

Repeat row 2 til desired length.

Ending Border: I also like to make a matching border, so repeat the border pattern for the other end.
